Whether the number works

Nothing here dials or rings anything. A number that is not reserved can still be disconnected, never assigned, or simply never answered.

Whether anyone holds it

A range being available for assignment means an operator may assign it. It does not mean this number has been given to a person or a business.

Who the operator is

Orisift does not contract a carrier-data provider, so the network a number sits on is not looked up. Numbers also move between operators, and nothing in a numbering plan records that.

Whether it has been ported

Porting is invisible to this check. A number's original range says nothing about where it lives now.

Whether it is being used for fraud

This is a range lookup against published regulator allocations. It is not a fraud score and there is no judgement in it about the person who gave you the number.

The ranges this checks

Four countries. A number from anywhere else can be read and checked against its numbering plan, but there is no reserved-range list behind it, so a result for one means only that we hold nothing to match it against.

The 555 prefix is not all fictional. Only 555-0100 to 555-0199 is reserved; other 555 numbers can be assigned and some are in service. More on why these ranges exist.
